50 years seems like a long time. You know what, it is a long time. 50 years ago today I sat in front of a black and white TV, in a nation where there were only three channels and they didn’t come into every home. On this TV I watched the launch of the first manned orbital flight of a US astronaut. We had waited patiently for many weeks as time and time again the launch was postponed for one technical reason or another. Finally, today was the day.
It roared off the launch pad, and because of the numerous problems that the Atlas rocket had experienced no one was sure that this man would make it into space safely. However, John Glenn was safely rocketed into space and became the first US Astronaut to orbit the earth. This flight would open up so many wonders to this country, and we would also suffer so many disappointments and disasters.
We would see a man walk on the moon in 1969, just 7 years later. Yet to this day, we have yet to see a man walk on Mars or return to that moon that was so hard earned all of those years ago.
We would see the development of the space shuttle, and see up to 8 people orbited into earth orbit at any time. Yet, we would be disappointed with shuttle accidents such as Challenger and Columbia, and we would eventually see no way for an American to be sent into space. We have flown so high, and now we are flying absolutely no where at all. I am so disappointed in this administration in particular but also in all of those over all of the many years who have brought us to this place. So much wasted potential. Man must reach beyond the bonds of earth and reach for the stars. We must spread out so we cannot be eliminated by an accident on our home planet.
