(***spoiler***) What they did in the movie was fine for a movie--we needed to know that if he could die, anyone could--but the TV show NEEDS that character. Or they need to replace him with someone just as good, but even that wouldn't be the same. He's the HEART of that spaceship, and it just wouldn't have the same dynamic without him.
